White Box Web Design

Nigel Clutterbuck

Developer, designer and technical partner for businesses that need thoughtful digital work and long-term platform thinking.

Profile

A practical mix of design, development and platform thinking.

I'm Nigel, a London-based developer and designer with more than 20 years of experience building websites, bespoke systems and digital products. My work spans visual design, frontend development, backend architecture, legacy modernisation and long-term platform improvement.

Over that time I have worked with startups, commercial businesses and specialist organisations that needed more than an off-the-shelf solution. Some projects start with a blank canvas, while others involve improving an existing platform, reducing technical debt, or helping a business rethink how its website or internal systems should support its goals.

That mix of design and technical experience means I can look at a project from several angles at once: how it should look, how it should work, how it will be maintained, and how it can support the wider business over time.

How I work

I start by understanding what the business is trying to achieve, not just what has been requested on the surface. That usually leads to better decisions around structure, functionality, content and scope before any serious build work begins.

From there, the process is practical and collaborative: define the problem clearly, shape the right solution, build it carefully, and keep improving it as the project grows. Whether the brief is a new brochure site, a custom business tool, or an ageing platform that needs bringing up to date, the aim is always the same: create something useful, dependable and easier to move forward with.

What clients value

Clarity

Turning vague ideas, competing requirements or legacy complexity into a plan that is easier to act on.

Versatility

Bringing together design, development, SEO, performance and platform thinking without losing sight of the end user.

Longevity

Building with maintainability in mind so the end result is not just polished on launch day, but still useful afterwards.

A bit more background

My interest in web development goes back to the early days of the web, when experimentation and creativity were often the best way to learn. That curiosity has never really gone away, but it is now backed by years of commercial experience and a much stronger focus on solving real business problems.

If you are looking for someone who can combine thoughtful design with solid development and a practical understanding of how digital products evolve over time, I would be happy to talk through what you are working on.
